SSLA’s programme is modelled on internationally valued models, whereby
students have the opportunity to study a four-year full-time Bachelor of
Arts (Liberal Arts) Honours Degree and Bachelor of Science (Liberal Arts)
Honours Degree programme, across eight semesters. The awarding of the
Bachelor of Arts (Liberal Arts) Honours or Bachelor of Science (Liberal
Arts) Honours degree is dependent on the student’s major area of
specialization.
B.A (Liberal Arts) Honours
Economics, Business Studies, Media Studies, Sociology, English, Psychology,
Political Science & Public Policy, Anthropology, Philosophy, International
Relations, and History
B.Sc. (Liberal Arts) Honours
Mathematics & Statistics, and Computer Studies
There are 3 pathways to acquiring the honours degree at SSLA -
- 1 major specialisation + 2 minor specialisations
- 1 major specialisation + 1 minor specialisation + 6 electives
- 2 major specialisations + 0 minor specialisation + 2 additional
electives
All the three pathways, leading to either the Bachelor of Arts (Liberal Arts)
Honours or a Bachelor of Science (Liberal Arts) Honours degree can be
acquired with a minimum of 198 Credits.
As certain forms of knowledge are essential for every student, therefore,
there are 20 Core compulsory courses spread across eight
semesters and ensure a holistic and practical knowledge applicable across
professions. Some of these skill-oriented courses include Creative Writing,
Computer Fundamentals, Quantitative Reasoning with Mathematics, Statistics &
Finance, Legal Awareness among others.
The need for an in-depth subject specialization is pursued through the
Major (ten papers, a two month long Internship and a
Dissertation/ Research Project) and Minor specializations
(6 papers), which offers the student twin knowledge foundations that may
often be applied in complementing roles suited to the professional needs.
Specialization courses (which are in the form of Majors and Minors) are
chosen in the 2nd semester and are taught from the 3rd semester.
SSLA also offers a basket of over 150 Elective Courses to
choose from, which students opt for, not only based on their interest but
these electives are unique, as they are all inter, multi and
transdisciplinary in nature. These lenses provide the subjects studied, a
fresh new perspective.
Also incorporated within the programme structure are the four
pillars of Community Outreach, Internship, Seminar Paper and
Research Dissertation, which all students have to complete as part of the
programme requirement.
In order to ensure that the students avail themselves of the many academic
opportunities at SSLA, Extra courses and Audit
courses are also offered across specializations (with specific
minimum academic prerequisites/requirements). With an inter-multi and
transdisciplinary approach, SSLA offers an education that weaves together
various disciplines that are not traditionally or typically offered at the
undergraduate level. SSLA thus provides a complete liberal arts education.
Following the Liberal Arts tradition, SSLA believes that intellectual freedom
and growth is the result of a balance of theory, practice and experiential
knowledge; open-minded scrutiny and logical arguments. The programme offers
a learning environment that allows for personal growth of the students
through research and analytical thinking, to develop competencies and values
required for employability, leadership and social justice in a dynamic
global community.
